The Victoria Advocate has devoted a story and an editorial to this breaking news. Frankly, folks, prices are up, so, duh!, tax receipts are up. But, please! Someone! Help me understand how the bond issue to build the two (three, four…) new schools contributes to this. First, even if the construction bills are just now being paid, the school district pays no sales tax. Secondly, they didn’t hire more teachers, per se, because thanks to Icky Ricky Perry, they had to cut positions at VISD. Why doesn’t one of you math geniuses explain how VISD is a contributor to this windfall? Thank you in advance.
But, hold on—is everything as rosy are we thought? According to Jeb Lacey, board member of the local chapter of the American Red Cross, contributions are down, and the economy is being blamed. I don’t know, is it good, or not? Read all about it here and decide for yourself.
On another note, filing for next November’s elections has started and folks are lining up to run! It should be a great year, and the comments here at Edith Ann are rolling in. Apparently there is some speculation that there will be some stiff competition over in the GOP camp. The current Sheriff, T. Michael O'Connor, has drawn an opponent, Scott Hornstein. Hornstein is a former employee of O'Connor's. State Rep. Geanie Morrison from our fair city and State Rep Todd Hunter of Corpus Christi, both republicans, are now opposing each other in the race to represent the newly created district. This should be fun. Rumor has it Hunter is gearing up and gunning up on his media stuff a la Sizemore Media Services. Stay tuned.
But, as I said, comments are already coming in. From that last blog: “It is filling date and the Republican Rumor Mill is saying:
a) Democrat Chuck Cole will run as a Republican in District Judge Kelly's position.
b) republican media consultant Mike Sizemore will run Geanie's opponents advertising campaign. (Where is the love? Guess Mike never got over having to refund the VEDC's $100,000 failed UHV switch campaign money).
c) GOP County Chair will receive a competitor from among one of the Republican Women members. Guess they didn't appreciate all of the meeting postponements Michael. Where's the love Michael? The ladies have pledged $5000 for the run. Woooo. This will be dirty.
d) Hear that Amy Munday will have competitition this time for her GOP precinct chair position. Bye-bye Ms. Munday.
e) Heard Lewis Neisch wants to resurrect the Moo-Moo meetings as a campaign promise when he runs against Mr Hagan. A free gizzard for all public attendees?”
and
“I hear the GOPsters warring faction is coming from within the existing GOP Executive Committee. The Victoria Republican Women unofficially supported Michael McCloud over Mary Anne Wyatt. The Cloud Campaign two years ago promised happy days and togetherness. Michael Cloud hasn't even held half of his meetings on time. And when he held a meeting most of the time he couldn't get a simple majority present. A number of precinct chairs have resigned in pure disgust of being associated with luke warm "republicans". The crowning blow was a 14 month process in just creating a mission statement and bylaws. Wait, but that is the way the National level Republicans do it. Scratch the failed local agenda idea... everything is operating ok... "all screwed up".
So, you know it doesn’t bother me if the local republicans are fighting again, but it does make for interesting alliances and couplings. We’ll just have to see how this all plays out, won’t we?
Keep those comments coming, boys and girls, but don’t shoot till you see the whites of their eyes.
So, until next time,

Hint to GOP County Chair Michael Cloud: you better charge the VPD for that next public service announcement. You will pobably need that five grand for your re-election campaign.
Does Mary Ann Wyatt work?
Don't have much of a dog in the political fight here, but on a different note, I must call B.S. on one of Gheni Platenberg's blogs on the VicAd website. The most recent one, just posted today about the kidnapper who is suing his former hostage, has, according to the blog counter, over 10,000 views.
No way, Jose. I know damn well there aren't even that many people who read the VicAd blogs, and certainly not half that many that would even care about hers. Or maybe, just maybe, people are stopping by just to see if she's stirring that pot as usual.
Give me a flippin break! LMFAO!!
Well, if the "Sisterhood of all that is Right and Good" is intent on taking Cloud on, then he better be highly funded. I bet them gals can raise the money when they need to!
I thought Mary Ann Wyatt was doing the legal work for Dennis Patillo at the title company, but she may have moved on from that.
Sugar--
That sounds funky to me, but maybe it's a 100 for 1 Wednesday! Remember double stamp Tuesdays? Same concept.
Well, looks like Queen Geanie and Rep Hunter are already starting up on the campaign trail. This will be a comical election campaign.
In the Vicad Geanie said she was in Austin "working". HEHEHEHEHEHE! Yeh, feeling guilty from screwing and embarrassing us six months ago? And now you are there helping us?
And Rep Hunter came to Victoria to meet and greet our economic development folks. HEHEHEH Get this... "I am a very big supporter of open government. I am not a smoke-filled-room guy," Hunter said. Are those contrarian statements? You might want to invest in a self-contained breathing apparatus when you meet with our Mayor and his Economic Development friends.
Who is the "Sisterhood of all that is Right and Good"?
The Republican Women of Victoria?
You know Todd Hunter has been sitting back all this time, discussing poor Geanie's district with her, and thinking we are all schmucks. I'm sure he's probabaly viewing this as a piece of cake.
Yeah, the local republican women. I thought they needed a name. Over in Fort Bend County the republican women are referred to as the Belles of Heaven. Since that was taken, I thought I'd use "Sisterhood of all that is Right and Good". Not sure it accurately described them, so feel free to offer up other suggestions.
As snooty as the girls are, perhaps the "Sisters of the Nostril Track". Or a slogan: "Yeah we are Conservative Republicans, One Broom-One Sisterhood."
"...One Broom-One Sisterhood."
Really? Reminds me of a sign I once saw--'If the broom fits, ride it'.
Well, alrightythen...
Now that Victoria will be in the Corpus district any voice we had will be lost in the shadow of Corpus Christi. It's too bad our local lawmaker failed to capitalize on the opportunity she had to really help Victoria and the region. Instead, she was bullied into deregulating tuition by senior members and then pandered to a bunch of blowhards regarding the TAMU/ UH fiasco.
This is her political legacy.
Don't be surprised if her name ends up on a building or some other permanent type structure in Victoria.
That old restroom in Riverside Park is not named. "The Geanie Morrison Legacy Crapper" Dedicated December 1, 2011 by her devoted public who, too, were sh-- on for 12 long years.
I agree on the dedication of a restroom in Geanie's name. But the sponsoring organization should be those students past and present whose credit rating and heavy financial yoke which was made possible by the huge student loans given to us by Geanie Morrison. THANKS GEANIE!
Well! Jack Marr is now in for Judge Pat Kelly's spot!
Ick! Yuck! Eww! No way!
What a scary thought!
Jack Marr - Chuck Cole - Jack Marr - Chuck Cole - Anyone else, pleeeease?
Interesting tidbit in regards to our "Republican" nominees for District 27 Judge. Chuck Cole has voted EVERY election in the 2000s in the Democrat Primary. Is Chuck really a democrat? Is Chuck a believer in same sex marriage, abortion, gay rights, anti-gun? Well, he sure supports the party which does.
And Jack Marr. Jack has voted as a republican in every primary EXCEPT for the last. Perhaps Jack believes in Mr Obama's agenda.
What a wonderful group of Republican nominees. GREAT RECRUITING, Michael Cloud!
Sugar Magnolia.
It is unfair for you to attack Gheni Platenburg. Stirring the pot? For who? For what? The blog Gheni wrote was on CNN and Fox the very same day. So what is the problem here, Sugar. It seem to me that you trying to pick on her. Tell me where I am wrong, Sugar?
Now onto the real topic at hand. I now know there is a God with district change. With Morrison in distict 32, I wonder what will happen to “leaderless” district 30?
Hey, BigJ. Not picking on Gheni. You know full well I tend to pick on the WHOLE advocate staff at times, and certainly she is part of that staff.
The thing I dislike about her blogs- and it's not a PERSONAL dislike of her, mind you, because I have never met her, so I cannot judge her as a person- is that they are always overboard and very sensationalistic. And again, I don't blame her as much as I blame the powers that be at the VicAd for making their "journalists" blog all the time. One of the reporters admitted about a month ago on her blog that the VicAd REQUIRES them to post a blog a day. This is too much, but that's a dead horse that I won't beat here because everybody knows how I feel abot that.
Anyway, you can bet the VicAd puts their reporters up to this so that they may increase the number of visits/hits on their website. Don't think for a moment they don't. In the cyber world, the more controversy, the more arguments, the more hits, the better. Thus, you have a few (very few) reporters that are kind of laid back and blog about "nice", noncontroversial topics. Then there are those that will do anything to get a little attention, thus stirring that pot to see if it will boil over.
That's my opinion, BigJ, and I'm entitled to it. Are there some "bloggers" and reporters that I like less than others? Of course. I'm human. And when the VicAd ignores quality reporting because they are focusing on "Enquirer" type stories, I will call them out on it, no matter who the reporter or writer is.
Does that answer your question?
11:03 Anonymous poster--
Could you elaborate on your Chuck Cole comment? I am not quite sureof the point you may be trying to make. And rather than guess at what you are implying, I'll hope you come back and clarify for me.
And while you are at it, please clear up the Jack Marr portion. If he's a republican and filed as a republican for a local position, where does the current President of the United States come into that equation? Again, I'm sure I'm just missing something, but I don't know what it is.
BigJ--
We're going to have to see what surfaces, won't we? I have heard very strong rumors that a young man out of Port Lavaca will be filing. Calhoun County is a very Dem county, so he would have a lot of local support. Again, we'll see, right?
Morning, Sugar!
If Jack Marr is running for the 24th District Court Justice position, it is not for election, but rather REelection. Jack Marr has completely controlled his former law partner Pat Kelly since his appointment to the bench.
Anytime Jack needs a TRO to help him in a case, he goes to his old buddy. Anytime Jack needs temporary orders that are damaging to the other party, he goes to his former law partner. At one point several years ago, Jack actually whined (under oath) about Koetter's relationship with Lynn Knaupp. Everyone should read that transcript.
If you want to see the kind of person Jack Marr is, simply search his cases on the County website. You will find that an extremely disproportionate number of his cases with actual contention end up in front of Kelly, regardless which Court they are filed in.
If you want to see people like Cole and Marr not file for these supremely powerful positions, stand up and DEMAND that Victoria County end the open docket system. Without that toll, People like Cole and Marr will have no interest.

What am I saying about Chuck Cole? Only that Chuck Cole is a Democrat and should have run as a Democrat. Running as a "Republican" for District Judge insinuates he "believes" in supposed "Republican" ideals. (Of course, most folks know our Republican leaders do not even believe in the ideals that the grassroots believe in. But our leaders are and always will be Elitist hacks. I think those folks are called hypocrits.) The CARE NOT Republicans.
Regarding Mr Marr. He voted in 3/4 of the Republican primaries. Did he switch over to the Democratic Primary to vote for Deborah Branch or perhaps Hillary Clinton? Or maybe MR Marr found a kindred socialist spirit in Mr Obama. I do not know. Perhaps Mr Marr should be asked that question. Of course, he would never answer the question, just like Mr Cole will not say why all of a sudden he became a "Born Again Republican". Just for principle, I will vote against both of these attornies.
Regarding Mr Cloud, this was not great recruiting. Mr Cloud is a big disappointment. But, at least he is consistent in his beliefs with the upper party hacks to which I assume he aspires.
Matt--
"If you want to see people like Cole and Marr not file for these supremely powerful positions, stand up and DEMAND that Victoria County end the open docket system. Without that toll, People like Cole and Marr will have no interest."<-----How do we do this?
Anon--
My perception, too, was that Chuck Cole was a Dem. If I am not mistaken, he was even recently a Dem. precinct chair, so his drift to the republicans was a little odd in my opinion.
Now, as to Marr--this comment makes no sense to me: "Or maybe MR Marr found a kindred socialist spirit in Mr Obama." Marr is running as a republican for a spot at the local level. How does the current President of the United States--who is not a Socialist, by the way--figure into that statement?
Many political candidates switch parties, and say they do so for political ideological reasons. I think there is more switching going on because of financial reasons than any other reason. Follow the money.
Why do they run? It's simple.
$$ = POWER = MORE $$ and MORE POWER
Edith Ann.
You got my ears burning about the "rumor".
EA,
I WOULD say the first step would be to alert the local media, but there is no sense in wasting your time. Because the typical watchdogs are nonexistent in this community, I guess it is a matter of spreading the word among the citizenry. A petition might be helpful. Maybe when we actually have a State Rep. that listens, we can approach him/her about drafting legislation to end the practice.
My experience has been that judges are supreme cowards, so it could be that little organized public outcry could do the trick.
Other than wanting to retire as a judge, thus ending your career on a high note, most attorneys, I would think, take a pay cut to run. They have to devote a lot of time to the campaign and then they live on a fixed salary.
I don't know--could be a pay raise in some cases.
BigJ--check your FB messages.
Matt--that's what I figured--it would take legislation. But, squeaky wheels...
Retirement benefits for judges who have completed x-number of years on the bench are pretty good.
plus, after retirement the judges can become "visiting" judges, still preside over courts on part-time basis when called and earn more $$. Serving on the Bench has its perks.
Don't fool yourself. There are very few judges (only one in this district) that take a cut in pay when they win their seat. You just have to learn how to earn "off the grid". I never realized how corrupt the judiciary was until recently.
Read the details of this case to know all you need to know about Jack Marr:
http://www.13thcoa.courts.state.tx.us/opinions/case.asp?FilingID=18289
Anyone who so openly defies the laws of this State, while moving children around like pawns on a chess board, is not fit to be a sitting judge.
An intersting case. So that is the type of attorney Marr is? In his Vicad article "he" said he is the only family law specialist. And that makes Marr qualified? It does say it has enriched him. Looking at the provided case shows me men (fair minded ladies) had better think twice about voting for a fellow like Jack Marr. This fellow is bad news. Michael Cloud, you really "recruited" some sorry Republican candidates for district judge.
